About
The Jones Library has successfully provided ESL, literacy, and citizenship education since 1985 and has been providing citizenship, integration, and basic skills instruction to a small group of older semi- literate legal permanent residents since 2018. With USCIS FY 2022 funding, Jones Library will develop a citizenship instruction program to bridge the gap between “zero” English proficiency and the “high beginner” level needed to enter most citizenship preparation programs. Their proposed “age-friendly” innovation is designed to 1) address the need for basic literacy/language skills instruction, and social/ civic integration at a beginning level for older immigrants, and 2) showcase an instructional model and tools for effectively reaching this hard-to-serve population. This program is led by renowned citizenship instructor Lynn Weintraub, whose textbook is used by citizenship instruction programs across the country.
